One of the aims of this inaugural festival is to test its feasibility as an
ongoing activity for the Gros Morne area.
Festivals focusing on fisheries,
marine environments and coastal communities/cultures are rare globally and the
region does not currently have a film festival. If successful, this kind of
niche festival could become an important activity for extending the tourism
season in the region and provide an anchor for a range of cultural and
educational activities in the region related to film and video. It would also
provide the basis for an excellent partnership between the region and the Bonne
Bay Marine Station.
This panel is an excellent opportunity for town leaders,
business owners, filmmakers and others in the region to participate in the
conversation about the future of the Fishing for the Future Film Festival in
the region.
Barb Neis is the founder of the festival and principal investigator of the CURRA. She is a University Research Professor and Sociologist at Memorial University. She has been researching fisheries issues for 35 years and much of that research has focused on the Newfoundland and Labrador fisheries. She generally works in interdisciplinary teams on projects identified in collaboration with people and organizations based in coastal communities.
